Segregation was popular throughout many places in the United States after slavery was abolished, however it was most prevalent in the south. Racial segregation first came up in the South in the railroads and other public places. Many southern states had adopted laws that required racial segregation in schools, transportation and other public facilities. The city of Boston had kept segregation in schools for the longest time of all, until the state outlawed segregation in public schools in 1855.
